Virtual Worlds, Real World Companies

Everyone want to be in second life. Now big business companies want to make product announcement in both the physical and virtual worlds.

Dell has kicked off its entry into Second Life with a press conference to open Dell Island, its in-world location. Dell has setup a second life shop to offer PCs to the residents.

IBM chief stepped into Second life for incubator launch. Virtual avatar of IBM’s chief executive, Sam Palmisano will discuss the announcement in Second Life’s Forbidden City, a space created in the virtual environment by IBM and the Chinese government.

Socialtext has recently announced to host press conference in World of Warcraft.

Some other companies that have already opened their shops in second life includes Crayon, Sun, BBH, Adidas, Nissan, Sun Microsystems, Reebok, Penguin, American Apparel, Reuters, CNET Networks, PA Consulting, Yankee, stadium, Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

With the decline in the effectiveness of TV advertising and more and more people joining these virtual worlds, it is obvious that big businesses will start pouring their dollars into new marketing channels.
