Instead of fetching, I use forwards in my other accounts. All my emails are forwarded to gmail account.

Regarding modifying from address, I think this feature is there since day one. I even send email from my blog id helloashok.com via gmail.

This feature does not exist.

It only change the address on the outgoing mail

I have also seen a post on digg saying that Gmail has been opened to public registrations,

The story was on the digg frontpage but most of the people who commented said its bogus and they are unable to find any direct signup link.
