Why a need for alternatives to conventional scrolling methods? Not sure, but smoother and more streamlined seems to be hot on the technology market these days, and innovations such as these are just a few steps away from touch screen devices for your PC. Synaptics Chiral Motion technology will change the way you scroll, eliminating restrictive motions and making your online browsing and software use much more efficient with less repetitive motion. Further, these are geared towards decreasing the risk of carpel tunnel syndrome, a syndrome that is rising in prevalence due to chronic mouse and touchpad use.

The Chiral Motion will involve circular motions that will control scrolling. Circle Right, move down. Circle Left, move up. You get the picture. This technology is being developed for everything from handhelds to laptops as well as PDA’s, and MP3 players. The design is sophisticated and compact so that you use the same amount of sensor space, but less movement to do so. What this means is that you will be able to use a wide range of scrolling with only a single gesture, whether you are doing so from long distances, or requiring fine and precise movements. Smooth continuous motions are the key here, whereas traditional scrolling requires repetitive motions, so your scrolling will continue until you finger actually leaves the surface.

I don’t know about this one, I could see scrolling get annoying very quickly, however, as someone who uses the computer for many hours daily, am always appreciative of ergonomically friendly devices as well.
