Simpsons Laughs at Apple

For almost two decades now, we have been watching The Simpsons poke fun at American culture. Last week they went to one of the most Americanized elements of technological culture by poking fun at the big wig Apple. Of course they were forced to protect themselves from copyright issues, so they were using the word ‘Mapple Store’ and ‘MyPods’ and there was even an appearance by Steve Mobs (you don’t need THAT joke explained, do you?) So yes, the jokes were not missed, and we allll know who they were laughing at. And because a picture really does say a thousand words, you can check out a clip of the episode here. What you won’t see here is the section of the episode where Lisa gets her first MyPod bill that ranks in over $1000. Most of the other jokes you will see in the clip will ring some Apple familiarity.

The last joke may be a little more elusive however, when you see Comic Book Guy running up to the giant screen of Steve Mobs and he hurls a sledgehammer. This is a clear reference to Apple’s ‘1984’ ad that you can check out here. The entire episode can be viewed at Hulu, and is not solely about MyPods, Mapple, or Steve Mobs, but the Mapple story is the secondary storyline. The actual plot of the episode centers around Bart making friends with a Muslim, and how Homer suspects the new chum’s friends may be terrorists. And while the subtle commentary on the 9/11 may seem dated, the Mapple satire is much more timely. Will it ever happen that satiring Apple will become dated? Who knows!
